The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed solidarity with the United States following the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal relayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong condemnation of the incident and his concern for the affected individuals.
“We have seen reports of the attack on former US President Donald Trump. Within hours of the news, our PM expressed deep concerns on the attack and strongly condemned the incident. He had also pointed out that violence has no place in politics and democracies. He wished the former President a speedy recovery and expressed solidarity with the family of the deceased, those injured, and the American people. The US is a fellow democracy, and we wish them well,” Jaiswal stated during the weekly press briefing on Friday.
The assassination attempt occurred on July 13 during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was on stage when gunshots were fired, prompting Secret Service agents to storm the stage and escort him off, with blood visible on his face. Trump reported that a bullet had pierced the upper part of his ear. One attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured. The gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents.
Following the incident, Trump formally accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race. In his address at the Republican National Convention, Trump attributed his survival to divine intervention. “The assassin’s bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the public’s support and vowing to continue his mission without retreating.
The FBI has launched an investigation into the shooting, as the US grapples with the aftermath of the violent attack on a prominent political figure.
