India and Sweden Launch LeadIT 2.0 at COP28: A New Era of Industrial Transition

In a pivotal development at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, India and Sweden have jointly announced the launch of the Leadership Group for Industry Transition 2.0 (LeadIT 2.0). This significant move was unveiled during a special LeadIT event, co-hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson.

Fostering a Net-Zero Emission Future

LeadIT, established to bring together countries and industries towards a net-zero emission future by 2050, represents a collaborative effort involving nations, corporations, and industry experts. The initiative is designed to facilitate the development of effective policies and practices that can expedite the transition of industries towards more sustainable operations. As of now, LeadIT comprises 18 countries and 20 companies, all working towards this collective goal.

The Three Pillars of LeadIT 2.0

Prime Minister Modi, while addressing the LeadIT event, outlined the three key focuses of LeadIT 2.0. These include ensuring an inclusive and just industrial transition, co-developing and transferring low-carbon technologies, and supporting emerging technologies. To this end, India and Sweden are also initiating the India-Sweden Industrial Transformation Platform, aimed at crafting a new narrative in green growth for future generations.

Modi highlighted the crucial role of industrial innovation in achieving global net-zero objectives, emphasizing the importance of government and industry partnerships. The LeadIT initiative, since its inception in 2019, stands as a testament to the effective collaboration between governments and industries in driving forward low-carbon technology and innovation, particularly benefiting the Global South.

Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in the strengthened partnership between Sweden and India. He emphasized the need for implementing and industrializing new technologies, particularly in hard-to-abate industries.

Global South and Climate Change: A Critical Perspective

In addition to the LeadIT 2.0 announcement, Prime Minister Modi addressed the significant impact of climate change on countries in the Global South, including India. He stressed the importance of climate finance and technology as essential tools to meet the aspirations of these countries. Despite limited resources, these nations remain committed to climate action. Modi urged developed countries to support the Global South in combating climate change, highlighting the disparity in contributions to climate change and the extent of its impacts.

The COP28 summit, held from November 28 to December 12 under the UAE’s presidency, provides a crucial platform for world leaders to discuss and take decisive action against climate change, with India playing a pivotal role in these discussions.
