India and Iran Deepen Ties: Chabahar Port and INSTC on Focus
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Tehran yielded significant progress on key issues like the Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). The two-day trip saw Jaishankar holding extensive talks with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian and President Ebrahim Raisi.
Chabahar Port: Building a Long-Term Framework
Central to the discussions was the establishment of a long-term framework for India’s involvement with the strategically vital Chabahar port. Located on Iran’s southern coast, Chabahar serves as a crucial gateway for India to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. Jaishankar and Iran’s Roads and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash finalized a crucial agreement outlining India’s continued development of the port. This paves the way for increased investment and enhanced regional connectivity.
Connecting Nations: The INSTC Project
Another key focus was the INSTC, a 7,200-km corridor facilitating trade between India, Iran, and other Eurasian nations. Jaishankar and Amirabdollahian discussed ways to expedite its implementation, highlighting its potential to boost regional trade and economic prosperity.
Beyond Bilateral Ties: Addressing Regional Concerns
The discussions also extended to broader regional and international issues like the security threats in the Red Sea, the Gaza situation, and the Ukraine conflict. Jaishankar urged swift action against threats to maritime shipping, likely referring to recent attacks by Yemeni rebels. He also exchanged views on Afghanistan and BRICS cooperation, showcasing the breadth of the India-Iran partnership.
Jaishankar’s visit reaffirms the deepening ties between India and Iran. With concrete progress on Chabahar and the INSTC, both nations stand to gain considerably from enhanced regional connectivity and trade. The positive engagement also positions them to address shared concerns and contribute to a more stable and prosperous region.
