India Aims for Global Maritime Leadership by 2047
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, chaired a mid-term review meeting in Delhi focusing on India’s ambitious goal to become a global leader in the maritime sector by 2047.
Reviewing the ‘PM Maritime Amritkaal Vision’
The meeting’s primary agenda was to assess the progress and strategize for the effective implementation of the ‘PM Maritime Amritkaal Vision’. This vision aims at turning India into a global maritime powerhouse by 2047.
Progress on Major Programmes
The meeting reviewed major programmes of the Ministry, including the flagship Sagarmala programme. It also evaluated the advancement of 162 projects, which have an investment outlay of Rs 1 trillion.
Participation of Key Officials
The meeting saw the participation of Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Tourism, Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, along with top officials from major Indian ports, PSUs, and other senior ministry officials.
Vision for India’s Maritime Sector
Emphasizing the significance of the maritime sector, Sonowal highlighted India’s critical stage in becoming a global leader. He stressed the importance of making Indian ports rank among the top 25 globally and adhering to the ‘Panch Karma Sankalp’.
Setting up Green Hydrogen Hubs
The Deendayal Port Authority is working on establishing Green Hydrogen Hubs, receiving significant interest from developers for green Ammonia production, catering to both domestic and international demands.
Outcomes of the Global Maritime India Summit 2023
The summit, held in Mumbai, marked a major milestone with investments of Rs 10 lakh crores. It witnessed the signing of 360 MoUs valued at Rs 8.35 lakh crores, covering various sectors like green initiatives, port modernization, and trade.
Sagarmala Programme and Coastal Development
Under the Sagarmala Programme, numerous projects are being monitored, with an aim for completion by 2035. The programme also focuses on the holistic development of coastal districts, with significant projects already completed.
