Illegal Gold Mine Landslide in Colombia Kills 14, Injures Seven
BOGOTA, October 20, 2026, (VoM News): At least 14 people have lost their lives, whereas, seven others were injured after a landslide struck an illegal gold mine in southwestern Colombia, a regional official source told VoM News.
As per details gathered by VoM News, the incident occurred in Narino, which is region bordering Ecuador, and where illegal gold mining is widespread and armed groups are active.
Narino Peace and Security Secretary Alex Gonzalez confirmed the revised death toll to Colombia’s Caracol network and said the search for survivors had concluded.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show residents and a backhoe helping recover bodies from the mine and transporting them towards a canoe on a nearby river.
Due to the difficult situation, rescue operation was also affected as presence of criminal groups, and tough terrain poses a hurdle in the process.
A source from the office told AFP that limited economic opportunities had pushed local communities towards dangerous mining activities, while traditional small-scale mining had largely disappeared.
Sources have told VoM News that armed groups operating in Narino are carrying out illegal mining, and are involved in trafficking, exortion like offenses.
VoM News has also learnt that mining accidents are frequently reported in Colombia, particularly at unregulated operations where safety standards are limited, and residents in the municipality where the landslide occurred have also previously reported violence by armed groups, including killings linked to suspected cooperation with security forces, rival organisations or disputes involving gold.
