Harmanpreet Kaur’s Experience Guides India to Six-Wicket Win Over Pakistan in Women’s T20 World Cup
India kept their semi-final hopes alive in the Women’s T20 World Cup with a narrow six-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan, thanks to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s crucial 24-ball 29. Chasing a modest target of 106, India’s batters struggled but managed to secure the victory in Dubai on Sunday.
India’s top-order struggled to accelerate, with Shafali Verma (32 off 35 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (23 off 28 balls) adopting a defensive approach. Their inability to boost the Net Run Rate (NRR) could impact India’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals. Despite the win, India’s NRR stands at -1.217, trailing behind Pakistan’s -0.555.
Smriti Mandhana’s early dismissal (7 off 16 balls) added pressure, and the team’s running between the wickets was subpar, likely due to the heat. Shafali’s fitness and inability to rotate the strike also slowed the chase, with her 35-ball knock yielding just three boundaries. Jemimah, known for her timing and gap-finding, struggled to bring the necessary power to her innings.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s experience proved crucial in steadying the ship after Jemimah and Richa Ghosh (0) were dismissed in quick succession by Fatima. Harmanpreet retired hurt just before the win was sealed, leaving debutant Sajana Sajeevan to finish the match with a boundary.
Earlier, India’s bowling unit dominated, restricting Pakistan to 105 for 8. Seamers Renuka Singh Thakur (1/23) and Arundhati Reddy (3/19), along with off-spinners Deepti Sharma (1/24) and Shreyanka Patil (2/12), effectively contained Pakistan. Their disciplined bowling, delivering 58 dot balls, left Pakistan struggling to score. Only Nida Dar (28) offered some resistance, helping Pakistan barely surpass the 100-run mark.
