Gurugram Initiates ‘Leopard Park’ Project to Protect Wildlife

In an effort to mitigate the incidents of big cats straying into urban areas, Gurugram has launched the ‘Leopard Park’ project. The initiative aims to create a 15-kilometer jungle corridor between vulnerable points in Gurugram to safeguard against conflicts between humans and wildlife.

    Addressing Human-Wildlife Conflict

Incidents of wildlife encroaching into urban zones have resulted in conflicts and tragedies. To address this issue, a leopard park will be established in Behrampur village. The park is part of a conservation plan encompassing a 15-kilometer stretch of the Aravalis, extending from the Bandhwari landfill to Damdama Lake.

Modeling After Jhalana Leopard Safari Park

Drawing inspiration from the Jhalana Leopard Safari Park in Jaipur, Gurugram’s leopard park will serve as a model for managing the presence of big cats in the city. This approach aims to provide a long-term solution to the problem of leopards straying into urban areas.

    Study and Action Plan

To facilitate the initiative, authorities have tasked an organization with studying the Aravalis, with the study expected to conclude by March of the following year. The Aravali Rejuvenation Board will receive the study’s findings and develop an action plan to safeguard the Aravali Hills against environmental harm and mining.

    Leopard Movement

Leopards in the region often migrate between the Aravalis in Gurugram and Faridabad, the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, and the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary in Delhi. The ‘Leopard Park’ project seeks to provide a safer environment for these big cats while reducing human-wildlife conflicts.

    Government Collaboration

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will fund this project. In November, representatives from various government departments will visit the Jhalana Leopard Park to gain insights into the model that will guide the development of Gurugram’s leopard park.
