Government Boosts Power-Supply to J-K by 293 MW Amid Winter, Advances Sustainability Initiatives
In a recent development providing relief to power consumers amid peak winter conditions, the Government of India (GoI) has augmented the power allocation to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by approximately 293 MW. This increase has been achieved by diverting power from distant facilities in West Bengal, Bihar, and even Bhutan.
The spokesperson for the Jammu & Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD) highlighted the efficiency of modern tools and software in managing power transfer seamlessly in today’s digital era. These automated systems respond to demand, availability, and network feasibility without the need for human intervention.
Explaining the new power allocations, the spokesperson noted that J&K heavily relies on hydroelectric power, which experiences a significant decline in generation during winters due to lower water levels in rivers. To offset this deficit, around 85% of the power supply during winters is sourced from thermal plants. The spokesperson reiterated the region’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable and consistent power supply throughout the year. In the ongoing fiscal year, J&K has entered historic Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for 1600 MW of solar power, 900 MW from hydro, and an additional 500 MW from thermal plants.

These initiatives, aligned with the Shakti policy, aim to achieve resource adequacy and establish an optimal mix of hydro, thermal, and solar generation. Efforts are also underway to harness wind power to maximize the potential of renewable energy sources.Addressing concerns raised in a recent news item about interruptions in J&K, the spokesperson attributed some of these issues to the non-disclosure of actual electric load by consumers.
The spokesperson assured that smart metering implementation is underway, focusing on ensuring uninterrupted power supply in areas equipped with smart meters, while also maintaining power supply hours in areas without such technology. A curtailment schedule is in place, published diligently to minimize inconvenience to the public. In response to the mentioned surge in interruptions, the spokesperson emphasized that electricity remains the primary and preferred source for heating in J&K. However, there is a call to discontinue the use of obsolete and environmentally unfriendly electric heating systems.
The spokesperson highlighted the recovery of numerous banned heaters during recent inspection drives conducted by the enforcement squads of KPDCL.Apart from ensuring a reliable power supply in challenging weather conditions, the Power Development Department (PDD) is actively involved in eliminating instances of illegal hooking. In the past seven days alone, inspection teams of KPDCL have conducted 7585 inspections in various districts of the Kashmir region, imposing fines totaling Rs.68 Lakhs on defaulters.
