Mandatory Disclosure for Synthetic Content on YouTube: Google Tightens YouTube Norms to Combat Deepfakes
Google has announced new measures to combat the proliferation of deepfakes on YouTube. Creators on the platform will soon be required to disclose any altered or synthetic content in their videos, especially those using AI tools to realistically simulate identifiable individuals. This disclosure will be made clear to viewers through labels in the video description panel and player.
Collaboration with Indian Government and Investment in Responsible AI
The announcement follows directives from Indian Union cabinet ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, urging social media platforms to take stringent actions against deepfakes. In response to the government’s plans to introduce guidelines to fight deepfakes, Google has emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to tackle AI-generated misinformation. This includes open communication and proactive mitigation strategies. Google has also invested USD 1 million in the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, to establish a center for Responsible AI, aiming to localize AI solutions to the Indian context.
Government’s Response to Deepfake Concerns
The government’s focus on deepfakes was spurred by reports from several celebrities about unauthorized deepfake images and videos. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns about the potential misuse of deepfakes.
Google’s Commitment to Responsible AI Use
Google’s blog post highlighted the feedback received from creators, viewers, and artists regarding the impact of emerging technologies, particularly in cases where someone’s face or voice is used without permission. The company’s initiative is part of a broader commitment to ensure responsible use of AI and technology, acknowledging the importance of protecting individual identities and perspectives.
These measures by Google represent a significant step in addressing the growing challenges posed by deepfakes and AI-generated content, ensuring a safer and more transparent environment for content creators and viewers alike.
