The trial, expected to last two to three weeks, centers around Singular’s 2019 complaint, alleging that Google’s Tensor Processing Units, introduced in 2016, infringe on Bates’ patented technology.

Singular contends that Google’s processors, specifically versions 2 and 3 introduced in 2017 and 2018, violate its patent rights by incorporating an improved architecture discovered by Bates. This architecture allegedly enables greater processing power, revolutionizing the way AI training and inference are conducted. Google argues that its processors function differently from Singular’s patented technology and claims the patents are invalid. Google asserts that its engineers rejected Bates’ technology, stating it was not suitable for the applications they were developing.

In a separate case, a US appeals court in Washington will hear arguments regarding the potential invalidation of Singular’s patents, which Google appealed from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The outcome of these legal proceedings could have significant implications for the use of AI technology in Google’s key products.

In related news, Google is also in the spotlight for agreeing to pay $700 million in a settlement to US consumers and states over allegations related to its Play Store.
