Google Disables Live Traffic Data in Israel and Gaza at Israeli Military’s Request
In a move to prioritize the safety of local communities, Google is temporarily disabling live traffic conditions in Israel and the Gaza Strip for its Maps and Waze apps. This decision comes at the request of the Israeli military amid the looming possibility of a ground invasion into Gaza. Google spokespersons stated, “As we have done previously in conflict situations and in response to the evolving situation in the region, we have temporarily disabled the ability to see live traffic conditions and busyness information.”
Google’s Response to Israeli Defense Forces Request
The request to remove real-time crowding data in Israel and Gaza was made by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to an anonymous source with knowledge of the matter. The concern lies in the fact that live traffic information could potentially reveal Israeli troop movements, prompting Google’s swift action. Last year, a similar situation unfolded in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, leading to the temporary disabling of real-time vehicle and foot traffic data on Maps and Waze. Although these apps will not display real-time traffic information, they will continue to provide drivers with estimated arrival times based on current conditions.
Apple Maps Also Complies with IDF Request
GeekTime, an Israeli tech site, was the first to report this development, suggesting that Apple Inc.’s Maps app has also complied with the Israeli army’s request. However, a representative for Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the Israel Defense Forces have yet to comment on the situation.
As tensions escalate in the region, this decision underscores the role of technology companies in responding to conflicts and prioritizing safety over real-time information dissemination.
