Google and Fitbit Collaborate on Health-Focused AI Features
Google has announced plans to introduce health-focused artificial intelligence (AI) features to Fitbit devices, aiming to enhance users’ wellness experiences. As part of this collaboration, Google Research will leverage its advanced technology, including the Gemini foundation model, to develop a Personal Health Large Language Model for Fitbit.
The Personal Health Large Language Model, powered by Gemini, will enable personalized health and wellness features within the Fitbit mobile app. This initiative aims to provide users with tailored insights and recommendations derived from data collected by Fitbit and Pixel devices. Premium Fitbit users will have the opportunity to test these experimental AI features before their public release.
Yossi Matias, Vice President of Engineering and Research at Google, highlighted the potential of the AI model to deliver personalized coaching and actionable guidance based on users’ health data. For example, the model could analyze sleep patterns and quality to suggest adjustments to workout intensity.
The Gemini-based AI model is currently undergoing testing and refinement to optimize its performance. It is being trained on a diverse set of de-identified health signals sourced from high-quality research case studies, in collaboration with accredited coaches and wellness experts.
Fitbit Labs will serve as the platform for Premium users to preview and test these upcoming features. Similar to Google’s AI Labs, Fitbit Labs will offer users the opportunity to engage with experimental features as they are fine-tuned for public release.
While Google has not provided a specific timeline for the release of these AI features, the collaboration between Google and Fitbit underscores their commitment to leveraging advanced technology to empower users with personalized health and wellness insights.
