Severe flooding wreaked havoc in northern Afghanistan’s Baghlan province, claiming at least 50 lives and leaving dozens missing, as reported by TOLO News. Hedayatullah Hamdard, head of Natural Disaster Response in Baghlan, confirmed the floods in districts like Burka, Nahrin, and central Baghlan. Rescue operations are ongoing, with fears that the death toll might escalate.
Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Taliban Ministry of Public Health, announced the dispatch of rescue teams to the affected regions. Despite efforts, determining the exact casualties remains challenging due to the intensity of the floods. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, extended condolences and directed authorities to employ all available resources for rescue operations.
Tragically, this disaster adds to a series of recent calamities in Afghanistan. Just earlier this month, heavy rains and subsequent flooding claimed the lives of 14 individuals, causing widespread destruction across the nation. Last month, nine people lost their lives as houses collapsed due to torrential rainfall and flooding in Helmand province’s Greshk and Kajaki districts. The region continues to grapple with the aftermath of natural disasters, necessitating urgent assistance and concerted efforts for relief and rehabilitation.
