Expert reveals surprising benefits of sober sex and the science behind “sobergasms”
An addiction specialist has shared new insights on “sobergasms,” explaining why people experience more intense orgasms when they avoid alcohol before sex.
Julie Morrow, Chief Clinical Strategist at AddictionResource.net, said recent surveys show that sober intimacy leads to deeper emotional connections and more satisfying sexual experiences compared to alcohol-fueled encounters.
According to Morrow, almost half of adults report having more intense orgasms when sober, creating a growing movement that challenges the common practice of using alcohol as “liquid courage” before intimate encounters.
The science backs up the benefits. “What many people call a ‘sobergasm’ refers to orgasms achieved during sober sex, which research confirms are more intense than those experienced during intoxicated sex,” Morrow said.
“Alcohol acts as a depressant on our nervous system, which dulls physical sensations and creates a disconnect between mind and body. This numbing effect impacts our ability to feel pleasure and reduces awareness of our partner’s needs.”

Research conducted through a partnership between a sexual wellness company and an alcohol-free spirits brand reveals striking statistics. While 64% of British people have had sex while intoxicated, only 20% always enjoy the experience.
“These findings show what researchers call the ‘orgasm gap’ – you’re 33% less likely to reach climax when drunk,” Morrow explained. “During sober sex, 45% of men and 15% of women report orgasming every time, but when alcohol is involved, these figures drop to just 29% of men and 11% of women.”
Emotional benefits create deeper connections. “More than half of people who choose sober intimacy say they appreciate the moment more,” said Morrow. “They feel more aware of their partner’s pleasure and more in tune with their own bodies.”
This heightened awareness allows better communication about desires, leading to more satisfaction for everyone involved. Morrow points out that sober sex also minimizes the chance of connecting with someone you otherwise wouldn’t have if sober.
Physical improvements go beyond just orgasms. “Men who previously struggled with erectile issues often see significant improvements when alcohol is removed from the equation,” Morrow noted. “For women, research shows orgasm frequency increases from 11% during drunk sex to 15% during sober encounters.”
According to research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, women may be more sensitive than men to certain effects of substances, which could explain why the benefits of sober sex appear more pronounced for women.
The study found that women who use substances face unique health risks compared to men, even when using smaller amounts or for shorter periods.
Young adults lead the sober movement. “Younger generations are at the forefront of the sober sex trend,” Morrow said. “Research shows 18-24 year olds are most likely to abstain from alcohol at 15%, and least likely to drink weekly at 17%.”
This generational shift mirrors broader “sober curious” movements, where young people question drinking culture and seek different ways to socialize and be intimate.
Studies on alcohol consumption patterns published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that cultural factors strongly influence drinking behaviors, which may help explain the growing interest in sobriety among certain demographics.
Making the transition takes communication. “For those looking to try sober sex, start with open communication with your partner,” Morrow advised. “Many people rely on alcohol to boost sexual confidence, with about one in three Americans admitting they use substances to feel more comfortable during sex.”
Morrow recommends building intimacy through non-sexual activities like massage or quality time together, which can create the emotional safety that alcohol previously provided.
“The sobergasm phenomenon shows us that what we gain from sober intimacy – deeper connections, better communication, and more intense physical pleasure – far outweighs what alcohol seems to offer,” Morrow concluded.
