Engineer Builds Jet-Powered Car with 18,000 Horsepower in 17 Years
Key Highlights:
- Ryan McQueen built a jet-powered car with over 18,000 horsepower.
- The car uses two Rolls-Royce jet engines from 1950s aircraft.
- It took McQueen 17 years of self-taught skills to complete the project.
Ryan McQueen has created the world’s first car powered by two Rolls-Royce jet engines, producing an astounding 18,000+ horsepower. Dubbed the “Insanity Jet Car,” this engineering marvel combines McQueen’s passion for both aviation and cars. It has taken him 17 years of self-taught skills and relentless dedication to bring this dream to life.
McQueen’s journey began as a teenager when he was inspired by Les Shockley’s legendary jet truck. By the time he turned 30, he decided to build something similar but had no prior experience in mechanics, welding, or car design. Despite these challenges, McQueen taught himself how to weld, use AutoCAD, and work with fiberglass and carbon fiber through online tutorials and hands-on experience at race tracks.
The Insanity Jet Car, which resembles a modified Ferrari, is powered by two Rolls-Royce engines originally built in the 1950s for experimental aircraft. These engines, once used by the British Royal Air Force and the U.S. Air Force, generate 14,000 pounds of thrust, propelling the car toward McQueen’s goal of surpassing 400 mph in a drag race.
Building the car was no easy task. McQueen sourced the jet engines from a friend in Colorado and spent years constructing the chassis and components on his own. After 17 years of hard work, COVID delayed his plans to showcase the car, but now McQueen is ready to bring the Insanity Jet Car to the tracks, aiming to push its limits and achieve incredible speeds.
