DMK and Congress Finalize Seat-sharing Agreement for 2024 General Election
Ahead of the 2024 general election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has concluded its seat-sharing discussions with the alliance. The Congress is slated to contest nine seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry, while the DMK will contest on 21 seats. The DMK is expected to release the candidates’ list in the coming days.
Seat Distribution and Alliance Partners
Congress will be contesting in Thiruvallur, Krishnagiri, Karur, Cuddalore, Myladuthurai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu, with one seat in Puducherry. Other alliance partners, including MDMK, IUML, and KMDK (DMK Symbol), have been allocated one seat each, while VCK, CPM, and CPI will contest two seats each in the Lok Sabha polls.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal reaffirmed the alliance’s unity, stating that the Congress and the DMK would contest together, with mutual support for candidates across Tamil Nadu. He expressed confidence in winning all seats in the state.
Support for Bharat Jodo Yatra
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Chief MK Stalin attended the closing day of Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra in Mumbai, where he praised Rahul Gandhi for his efforts in uniting the country. Stalin pledged his support to the INDIA bloc, highlighting Gandhi’s vision for justice and unity against divisive forces.
Past Performance and Alliance Strength
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the DMK-led alliance secured a significant victory, winning 38 out of 39 seats. The Congress, part of the alliance, secured eight seats out of nine contested. With a notable vote share, the alliance demonstrated strength and unity against the opposition.
Support from Makkal Needhi Maiam
Actor Kamal Hassan, president of Makkal Needhi Maiam, announced his decision to support the DMK-led alliance in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls, further strengthening the alliance’s prospects in the region.
