In a landmark decision, the Delhi High Court has taken strong measures against the rampant piracy issue plaguing the entertainment industry. The court, in response to a plea by Red Chillies Entertainment, the film production company owned by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, has issued a significant directive targeting the unlawful distribution of the movie “Jawan.”
Cracking Down on Piracy
Justice C Hari Shankar, presiding over the case, has not only ordered the immediate deactivation of all groups and channels involved in circulating and selling pirated copies of the film but has also gone a step further. The court has directed major platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, along with mobile network operators, to provide subscriber information connected with these illegal groups and channels. This move is aimed at enabling legal actions against those responsible for the infringement.
Identifying the Culprits
Red Chillies Entertainment initiated the plea after identifying an individual named Rohit Sharma, who was found distributing pirated copies of “Jawan” through WhatsApp. Justice Shankar, in his directive, also compelled Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Instagram, to deactivate Rohit Sharma’s accounts across these platforms. Moreover, the court emphasized that similar actions should be taken against administrators of other WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels once their identities are revealed.
Legal Advocacy and Police Complaint
Senior advocate Raj Shekar Rao represented Red Chillies Entertainment in this crucial legal battle. Additionally, the plea revealed that a formal police complaint was lodged against Rohit Sharma and his associates in Mumbai on September 13. The diligent efforts of agents employed by the film’s production team played a pivotal role in identifying and reporting these pirates.
This court order stands as a beacon of hope for the entertainment industry, signaling a commitment to protect intellectual property and the rights of content creators. It underscores the significance of safeguarding the industry against piracy, which not only causes substantial financial losses but also undermines the hard work and creativity of artists and filmmakers.
