Delhi HC to Examine Kapil Devs Plea Against Animal Cruelty Call to Address Cruelty to Animals
The Delhi High Court has initiated proceedings to review a plea by former Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev and his wife, Romi Dev, along with animal rights activist Anjali Gopalan. The petition challenges sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act that allow for the destruction of stray dogs and other animals through prescribed methods and under the authority of existing laws. The petitioners argue that these provisions are arbitrary and in violation of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty.
Campaign for Animal Rights and Sensitization
In their plea, the petitioners call for campaigns to raise awareness of animal rights and seek updated training and tools for veterinarians, local investigation agencies, and judicial officers to better understand and enforce animal laws. They also challenge sections 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code, suggesting that these laws discriminate against animals. The court will resume the matter on December 19.
