Delhi HC Advocates for Balanced Approach between Environment and Socio-Cultural Activities
In a landmark decision, the Delhi High Court has emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy environment while acknowledging the significance of socio-cultural activities in society. This crucial ruling comes as a response to concerns over pollution, traffic congestion, and damage to trees caused by large events held in public parks.
Balancing Act for Environmental Preservation
The High Court, led by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, underlines the dual importance of a clean environment and socio-cultural activities for human co-existence. It recognizes that fresh air, oxygen, and a healthy environment are essential for survival. Simultaneously, it acknowledges that socio-cultural activities play a vital role in our lives and should not be banned outright. Instead, the focus should be on regulating these events to prevent harm to the environment.
Challenges in the Face of Pollution Crisis
The court acknowledges the urgent need for action, as the Air Quality Index in Delhi has reached toxic levels, and citizens are suffering. It calls for a joint effort from both individuals and authorities to save the city. In a specific case involving the Shri Ram Leela Committee, Janakpuri, the court grants permission for Dussehra and Ramleela celebrations in a designated ground for the year 2023. However, it emphasizes the importance of protecting the existing green cover in the area.
This ruling reflects a balanced approach, ensuring that socio-cultural activities can continue while preserving the environment. It calls on all residents to be ‘Saviours Of Nature’ and actively contribute to the cause of environmental conservation.
