Delhi, September 11, 2023: The Delhi government has re-imposed a ban on firecrackers ahead of the festive season, citing the need to protect the environment and reduce pollution levels during the winter months. Under the new rules, the manufacturing, storage, sale, online delivery, and bursting of any type of firecrackers will be completely prohibited in the national capital.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced the decision, stating that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had decided to ban firecrackers on the occasion of Diwali to control pollution. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee will issue a circular directing the police not to issue any licenses for firecracker-related activities.
Delhi has imposed similar restrictions ahead of the festive season for the past three years. Last year, the government announced that bursting firecrackers on Diwali in the city could result in a jail term of up to six months and a fine of ₹200.
While there has been some improvement in Delhi’s air quality in recent years, the government aims to further enhance it. Therefore, the decision to ban firecrackers has been reiterated this year. Last year, instructions from the government stated that the production, storage, and sale of firecrackers in Delhi would be punishable with a fine of up to ₹5,000 and three years in jail under Section 9B of the Explosives Act. The government has not yet provided any fresh updates on the matter.
The ban on firecrackers is part of ongoing efforts to address air pollution and its adverse effects on public health and the environment in Delhi.
