Critical Oversight: 60 Percent of J-k Colleges Lack NAAC Accreditation
In Jammu and Kashmir, concerns arise as nearly 60 percent of colleges lack accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), prompting questions about the adequacy of curriculum coverage and the effectiveness of teaching-learning processes in these institutions.
NAAC Accreditation Status Raises Concerns
According to official documents, out of the 147 colleges in the region, only 59 have obtained NAAC accreditation. This revelation underscores the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the higher education landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.

University Rankings Reflect the Challenge
The India Rankings 2021, released by the Ministry of Education, highlight the standing of Kashmir University at 48th and Jammu University at 66th among the top 100 universities in the country. These rankings draw attention to the broader issues affecting the quality of higher education in the region.
Quality Assurance and the Role of NAAC
Official documents stress the importance of NAAC accreditation for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in assessing conformity to quality standards. The criteria encompass various aspects such as performance in educational processes and outcomes, curriculum coverage, teaching-learning processes, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organization, governance, financial well-being, and student services.
Innovative Initiatives and Skill Development
The documents shed light on initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of education, including the establishment of virtual labs and mass media communication labs. Furthermore, the government has identified 16 Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) to introduce B.VOC programs and 14 additional GDCs for establishing Centers for Invention, Innovation, Incubation, and Training to bolster youth employability.”At least 30 colleges are in the process of starting research activities by establishing research hubs under the Hub and Spoke model,” the document reveals. Moreover, 50 colleges have been earmarked to offer skill courses of level-4 under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).
