Congress Releases Manifesto for Mizoram Assembly Elections
In anticipation of the upcoming Mizoram assembly elections, the Congress party has unveiled its manifesto, laying out an array of promises aimed at addressing the state’s various challenges and concerns. In a bid to garner voter support, the party has made commitments that span several key areas, including healthcare, infrastructure development, job creation, and support for various demographic segments.
Key Promises from the Congress Manifesto
1. Old Pension Scheme Reintroduction
One of the major highlights of the Congress manifesto is the pledge to reintroduce the old pension scheme, which could bring relief to government employees concerned about their retirement benefits.
2. Affordable LPG Cylinders
The Congress party promises to provide LPG cylinders at a highly subsidized rate of Rs 750 for households facing financial difficulties. This initiative seeks to alleviate the burden of cooking fuel expenses for the poor.
3. Health Insurance Cover
In a significant move, the Congress is committed to offering a substantial health insurance cover of Rs 15 lakhs per family, ensuring cashless treatment at hospitals. This initiative could bring relief to countless families struggling with healthcare costs.
4. Strengthening Local Governance
The Congress aims to establish an efficient, transparent, and corruption-free government. They have pledged to empower village councils and local bodies with greater authority, responsibilities, and financial resources to strengthen grassroots democracy.
5. Infrastructure Development
The party is keen on advancing the economic development of Mizoram by investing in improved public infrastructure assets such as roads, airports, and power lines. This commitment aims to promote overall economic growth in the state.
6. ‘Tang Puihna’ Scheme
In a boost to farmers and entrepreneurs, the Congress plans to introduce the ‘Tang Puihna’ scheme, offering monetary assistance of Rs 2 lakhs. This support is expected to help in the development of sustainable economic and livelihood activities.
7. Job Creation
The party aspires to create 1 lakh jobs for the youth of Mizoram through the ‘young Mizo entrepreneurs programme’ with startup funding provisions.
8. Support for Vulnerable Groups
The Congress has also promised an old-age pension of Rs 2,000 per month. Furthermore, the initiative to provide LPG cylinders at Rs 750 is intended to assist those in need, including beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Priority Household, BPL households, and families led by women.
Defying the Status Quo
In a bold move, the Congress announced Meriam L Hrangchal as its candidate in the Lunglei South seat, defying the diktat of a prominent student organization, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP). This influential organization had advocated for non-Mizo women who marry individuals from outside the Mizo community not to be nominated by any political party. The party’s decision signals a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
The Mizoram assembly elections are scheduled for November 7, with the vote count set to take place on December 3. The Congress, along with other political parties, is vying for the opportunity to address the state’s pressing issues and work towards its betterment.
