Congress Likely Announce Candidates List After CEC Meet
The Congress Party has released a list of 40 star campaigners, including Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The party is expected to announce candidates for the second and third phases of the elections after a Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
The CEC, chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders, will meet at 4 pm in New Delhi to finalize candidate names for each constituency. The meeting, expected to last 2-3 hours, will discuss strong contenders for each seat. The candidate list is likely to be released by AICC General Secretary (Organization), K C Venugopal, late in the evening.
Earlier, a Congress Screening Committee meeting was chaired by Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and attended by Sachin Rao, Anto Antony, Bharatsinh Solanki, and JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra. The party has instructed JKPCC Working President Raman Bhalla to intensify his campaign in the Jammu South constituency. Former MP Ch Lal Singh is likely to run from Basohli. The CEC will also decide on the candidacy of former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who seeks to contest from Chhamb instead of Akhnoor. Satish Sharma, son of former Congress MP Madan Lal Sharma, is considered the frontrunner for the Chhamb seat, where BJP’s Rajiv Sharma faces internal opposition.
Woman candidates like JKPCC General Secretary Namrata Sharma and another potential candidate from Bani are also being considered. Bharatsinh Solanki, AICC General Secretary I/C J&K, will arrive in Jammu on Monday to hold key party meetings on Tuesday.
Congress’ star campaigners list includes Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, Ajay Maken, Ambika Soni, and other senior leaders.
