Congress Deputy CM Condemns Protests Turned Rampage in Bengaluru
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress Chief DK Shivakumar strongly condemned the recent events in Bengaluru, where pro-Kannada protesters resorted to vandalism during their demonstrations.
Shivakumar emphasized the importance of respecting democratic rights while stressing that unlawful actions cannot be condoned.
“In a democracy, everyone has the right to protest. However, we cannot tolerate anyone taking the law into their own hands.
I am disturbed by the vandalism of boards and establishments by the pro-Kannada protesters,” Shivakumar expressed to reporters, firmly opposing the damage to property during protests.
He urged businesses to adhere to the government’s directive to display 60 per cent Kannada on their signboards and assured the commitment to safeguarding the state’s citizens.
Shivakumar stressed compliance with the recent BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) order mandating a focus on Kannada in signage boards across shops.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah conducted a high-level meeting addressing the compulsory installation of Kannada signboards in shops and offices.
The meeting involved officials from the BBMP, the primary civic body in Bengaluru, and representatives from the state Culture Department.
Earlier, the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) expressed concern over the BBMP’s direction regarding the mandatory inclusion of ’60 per cent Kannada’ letters on all commercial establishments’ name boards.
While affirming its commitment to follow government rules, the FKCCI urged its members to comply with the state’s or BBMP’s orders.
Notably, the Bengaluru Police detained members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), a pro-Kannada activist group, who protested demanding businesses to include Kannada boards in accordance with the state’s obligation.
The protest, led by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike State President T A Narayan Gowda, aimed at raising public awareness.
Regrettably, KRV activists allegedly vandalized shops with signboards in English letters, including breaking flower pots outside the Mall of Asia in Bengaluru and defacing English signboards with black ink, reported earlier by officials.
