China’s Surprising Child-Rearing Costs; Exceeds US and Japan
Contrary to its reputation for affordable products, China has emerged as one of the most expensive places for raising a child, surpassing costs in both the United States and Japan, according to a study by the YuWa Population Research Institute.
Raising a child in China averages $74,800 until age 17, rising to a staggering $94,500 for a full bachelor’s degree.
This financial burden, 6.3 times higher than China’s GDP per capita, raises concerns about its impact on fertility rates in a country already grappling with demographic decline and an aging population.
