Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections: The Battle for Power Intensifies

The second phase of Chhattisgarh’s assembly elections commenced on Friday, signaling a high-stakes political showdown for seventy constituencies. The fierce contest between the incumbent Congress and the opposition BJP has become the focal point of this electoral battle.

    Campaign Frenzy and Major Contenders

In the run-up to this crucial phase, both parties engaged in extensive campaigning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel led the charge for their respective parties. With 958 candidates in the fray, key figures like Bhupesh Baghel, Charandas Mahant, TS Singh Deo, and Arun Sao are contesting. The state has set up over 18,000 polling stations, including 727 ‘Sangwari’ booths staffed by women.

    Critical Election Issues

Corruption, price rise, and the price of paddy are among the key issues that have emerged. The BJP has accused the Congress-led government of corruption and financial irregularities, a charge vehemently denied by the Congress. The caste factor is also significant, given the state’s large OBC and tribal population.

    Promises and Manifestos

Both parties have laid out ambitious promises to woo the electorate. The Congress, riding on its welfare schemes, has promised enhanced paddy procurement rates and subsidies, while the BJP’s ‘Modi ki guarantee’ manifesto pledges job creation, financial assistance to women, and affordable LPG cylinders.
