CBI Takes Over Investigation into NewsClick’s Foreign Funding Violations
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed control of the investigation into alleged foreign funding violations by the NewsClick website. The Special Cell of Delhi Police had arrested NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha on October 3 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, following allegations of receiving funding from a network associated with Chinese propaganda.
Amit Chakravarty, the HR head of NewsClick, was also arrested during searches at the homes of journalists associated with the news portal in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had registered a case against NewsClick and examined its funding, attaching some assets linked to the news portal.
Foreign Funding Violations
The investigation pertains to alleged violations in foreign funding and its utilization. The case is based on information provided by the Enforcement Directorate, which had previously claimed that NewsClick received approximately Rs 38 crore from entities linked to China, prompting scrutiny of how these funds were used.
In August, a New York Times investigation had alleged that NewsClick, along with other organizations, had received funding from a network connected to US millionaire Neville Roy Singham, which promoted Chinese propaganda. NewsClick’s offices had also been searched by Income Tax officers in 2021 in a tax evasion case.
