Case Filed Against Ex-Maharashtra Minister and Others for APMC Mismanagement
The Navi Mumbai police have initiated legal action against eight individuals, including a former Maharashtra minister, in connection with alleged mismanagement at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC). This mismanagement is reported to have caused a significant financial loss to the state exchequer.
Allegations of Misappropriation and Favoritism
The primary accusation centers around the inappropriate allocation of contracts for constructing toilets in areas under APMC’s jurisdiction. The contracts are alleged to have been awarded unfairly, favoring certain organizations. This misconduct reportedly took place over an extended period, from 2005 to 2022.
Financial Irregularities Leading to State Loss
The accused are believed to have breached various regulations governing the APMC, leading to a financial loss estimated at Rs 7.61 crore. This loss pertains to the state exchequer, underlining the severity of the allegations.
Legal Charges and Investigation
Based on the findings of a government audit team, the police have filed charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 406, 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 34 (common intention). In addition, provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act have also been invoked in the case. The involvement of both current and retired officials of the APMC, along with a former state minister, highlights the potential scale and impact of the alleged mismanagement.
Ongoing Inquiry and Implications
This case opens up a crucial inquiry into the operations and governance of the APMC, a significant entity in the state’s agricultural sector. The charges brought forward will necessitate a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in public institutions.
