Bombay HC Takes Suo Moto Cognisance of Horrific Hospital Conditions
The Bombay High Court has stepped in to address the alarming state of two hospitals in Maharashtra, particularly one in Nanded, where 31 deaths, including 16 children, occurred within a 72-hour timeframe.
Expressing grave concern, the court has demanded comprehensive information about budgetary allocations and has sternly warned the state government that any fatalities resulting from inadequate manpower or a lack of medicines will not be tolerated. The state must provide these details by Friday, as directed by a bench led by Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya.
Ground Report Reveals Shocking Conditions
The court’s intervention follows a ground report by NDTV, which exposed appalling conditions at the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded. The report depicted a distressing scene where pigs roamed freely on the hospital premises, while patients’ relatives carried out chores.
Additionally, images revealed plastic bottles and wrappers obstructing drains, raising serious questions about cleanliness and hygiene, fundamental expectations at any healthcare facility.
“This is how it is every day,” lamented a woman while continuing her vessel cleaning. Another resident expressed their grievances, stating, “We can’t use the toilet. We get nothing here; we have to go out for medicines and everything else. Where will the poor people go?”
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde responded to the situation, asserting that his government takes the deaths very seriously and denying any medicine shortages.
