Boat Sinks in Jehlum Srinagar: 6 Drowned, 5 Rescued, 3 Missing
In a tragic event, six people, including five young students, drowned when a boat overturned in the Jehlum River near Batawara Srinagar early Tuesday morning. Five individuals were rescued, while three remain missing.
Officials reported that the boat, carrying the students to a local school, capsized, resulting in the death of five minors. Rescuers managed to save five other students. Following the incident, a large-scale rescue operation involving SDRF, NDRF, local police, and community members was initiated.
Eleven people were quickly located and taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, six were pronounced dead upon arrival, while the remaining five are receiving medical treatment. Efforts continue to locate the three missing students.

Key officials, including the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, IGP Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, and SSP Srinagar, are present at Gandbal Batwara overseeing the rescue efforts.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his profound sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement, he said, “I am deeply saddened by the boat accident in Srinagar that claimed lives. My thoughts are with the affected families, and I pray for their strength during this difficult time. The SDRF, Army, and other agencies are actively involved in relief and rescue operations.”
The administration is extending full support to the grieving families and providing medical assistance to the injured. Marcos teams have been put on alert. Governor Sinha continues to monitor the situation closely and guide the rescue teams on the ground.
