- The BJP has experienced internal dissent in multiple constituencies.
Three senior BJP leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, including vice president Pawan Khajuria, were suspended on Wednesday for contesting the upcoming assembly elections against the party’s official candidates, according to a party spokesperson.
The suspension, initiated by the recommendation of a disciplinary committee chaired by Sunil Sethi, includes senior leaders Balwan Singh and Narinder Singh Bhau.
Khajuria, running as an independent candidate from Udhampur East, is contesting against BJP’s chosen candidate, former MLA R S Pathania. Similarly, Balwan Singh has joined the election as a candidate for the National Panthers Party (NPP) from the same constituency.
Meanwhile, Narinder Singh Bhau is running as an independent from the Chhamb constituency, opposing BJP’s Rajeev Kumar, a former MLA.
The suspension order was issued by BJP’s working president, Sat Paul Sharma, who cited “indiscipline” for the decision to expel the three members.
This disciplinary action reflects the ongoing internal tensions within the party, as nearly a dozen BJP members have resigned or chosen to contest the elections independently across various constituencies.
In Chhamb, BJP faces additional challenges as senior Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Tara Chand is also contesting the election, further complicating the political landscape for the party.
