Bihar Battles Severe Air Pollution: Strict Enforcement of Laws Urged
In response to the worsening air quality in many cities across Bihar, the state’s pollution control board has urged district administrations to stringently enforce laws to combat air pollution. This call for action comes as several districts in the state record ‘very poor’ air quality, posing health risks to residents.
Critical Air Quality Levels in Bihar Cities
According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) daily Air Quality Index (AQI) bulletin, Begusarai topped the list of 243 cities nationwide with an AQI of 382, followed by Saran at 376 and the state capital, Patna, at 375. Other districts like Hajipur, Purnea, Katihar, Motihari, Bhagalpur, Rajgir, and Arrah also recorded very poor AQI levels. An AQI over 300 is considered ‘very poor’ and can lead to respiratory illnesses upon prolonged exposure.
Pollution Control Measures and District Initiatives
Devendra Kumar Shukla, the chairman of the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB), acknowledged the deteriorating air quality and attributed it partly to recent climatic conditions, including a lack of rainfall. He emphasized that district administrations have been instructed to strictly enforce pollution control laws. Additionally, District Magistrates have been directed to identify pollution hotspots in their areas.
Focus on Hotspots and Construction Activities
The chief secretary in a recent meeting highlighted the need to form special squads for identifying and managing hotspots, particularly in areas of construction activities, waste management, traffic congestion, agricultural stubble burning, dry road sweeping, and dry leaf burning.
State’s Commitment to Tackling Air Pollution
The BSPCB’s proactive measures and the emphasis on law enforcement reflect Bihar’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of air pollution. These efforts are crucial in mitigating health risks and improving the overall air quality for the residents of Bihar.
