Basohli Pashmina Receives Coveted Geographical Indication Tag

Preserving Tradition and Craftsmanship in Jammu and Kashmir

Basohli Pashmina, a timeless craft originating from Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, has achieved the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of this more than a century-old tradition. The GI tag, a recognition of the unique qualities and regional significance of a product, was officially granted, according to a statement by an official spokesperson.

Known for its exceptional softness, fine texture, lightweight feel, insulating properties, and extended lifespan, Basohli Pashmina holds a special place in the world of hand-spun products. The Department of Industries and Commerce, in collaboration with NABARD Jammu and Human Welfare Association, Varanasi, played a pivotal role in achieving this remarkable milestone.

This year has witnessed the GI tagging of not only Basohli Pashmina but also other traditional crafts from the region, such as Basohli painting and Chikri wood from Rajouri district in Jammu division. Basohli Pashmina, spun on handlooms using wooden needles, stands out for its unique qualities and craftsmanship.

The product range of Pashmina includes exquisite shawls for both men and women, mufflers, blankets, and baskets. The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu took significant steps to revive this centuries-old craft by establishing common facility centers for weavers, expanding the network of registered weavers and cooperative societies, developing clusters, and providing access to various departmental schemes.

The Geographical Indication (GI) tag, in essence, serves as a recognition and protection mechanism for products closely linked to specific geographical locations. It not only acknowledges the cultural and historical significance of these products but also safeguards their quality and reputation in the market.
