ASI Continues Survey at Bhojshala Complex Amid Dispute

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continued its survey at the Bhojshala Complex in Dhar district for the fourth consecutive day on Monday. The survey, mandated by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, aims to ascertain the archaeological significance of the site.

The Bhojshala Complex holds religious significance for both Hindus and Muslims. Hindus revere it as a temple dedicated to Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati), while Muslims consider it the site of the Kamal Maula mosque. This dual significance has led to a longstanding dispute over the ownership and usage of the complex.

    Court-Directed Survey

The ASI commenced the archaeological survey on March 22, employing advanced techniques such as carbon dating, GPS, and GPR technology. The court has instructed a thorough examination both inside and outside the complex over a 50-meter stretch.

Ashish Goyal, representing the Hindu Front for Justice, expressed confidence in the survey process, emphasizing the Hindu community’s claim to the site. He hopes the survey will provide conclusive evidence to support their case.

Abdul Samad, representing the Muslim side, expressed reservations about the necessity of the survey, citing previous assessments and changes observed in the monument since then. He voiced concerns over recent activities and urged proper guidelines for access to the complex.

Legal Challenge & High Court Ruling

Samad revealed that they have challenged the high court’s decision to conduct a new survey in the Supreme Court. They contest the need for a fresh assessment and seek clarity on the conditions for access to the complex

The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently permitted the ASI survey at the Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula Mosque complex, aiming to resolve the longstanding dispute over its ownership and usage. The court’s decision reflects ongoing efforts to address the complex religious and legal issues surrounding the site.
