A Delhi court on Friday cleared Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the liquor policy case, bringing a major legal battle to a close. The Rouse Avenue Court also discharged senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia and 21 others.
The court observed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheet contained several lacunae and was not backed by sufficient evidence. It further stated that there was no overarching conspiracy or criminal intent in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy of the previous AAP government.
The case stemmed from allegations of corruption in the design and execution of the liquor policy, which was later withdrawn. Parallel investigations were conducted by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
From ED Summons To Supreme Court Relief: Key Events
The controversy began in October 2023 when the ED issued its first summons to Kejriwal, then serving as Delhi Chief Minister. He skipped multiple summonses between November 2023 and February 2024, describing them as politically motivated and legally untenable.
On March 21, 2024, after missing nine summonses, Kejriwal was arrested by the ED. He challenged the action in the Delhi High Court and later moved the Supreme Court seeking protection from coercive action.
In May 2024, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, after which he surrendered at Tihar Jail in June. He was subsequently granted regular bail by a Delhi court, though the order was briefly stayed. On June 26, 2024, he was arrested by the CBI in connection with the same case.
In September 2024, the Supreme Court granted him bail. On January 22, 2026, a Delhi court acquitted him in two ED-related cases, and on February 27, 2026, he received a clean chit in the CBI case as well, effectively closing all proceedings related to the liquor policy matter.
