Army Builds Bailey Bridge in Record 12 Hours, Restores Traffic on Jammu’s 4th Tawi Bridge

Army Builds Bailey Bridge in Record 12 Hours, Restores Traffic on Jammu’s 4th Tawi Bridge

Jammu heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday as the Army restored full traffic movement on the city’s vital 4th Tawi bridge by constructing a 110-foot bailey bridge in just 12 hours. The swift action came after traffic remained disrupted for three days due to the collapse of the approach road on the Bhagwati Nagar side following heavy rains and flash floods in the Tawi River.

The sudden cave-in on August 26 had left several vehicles trapped and damaged, forcing the complete closure of the bridge. Authorities later allowed light vehicles through one tube, but the other remained closed, causing severe traffic congestion across the city.

On the request of the civil administration, the Tiger Division of the Indian Army swung into action on Saturday morning. Army engineers began work early and, by evening, the emergency steel structure was ready, enabling vehicles to move smoothly once again.

“This Bailey bridge has been built in just 12 hours by our engineers. The 4th Tawi bridge is a vital link for Jammu, and until the collapsed road is permanently repaired, this bridge will ensure smooth connectivity,” Major General Mukesh Bhanwala, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Tiger Division, told reporters at the site. He added that while permanent restoration of the damaged road would take more time, the Army’s intervention had provided an immediate solution.

The reopening of the bridge has eased traffic chaos and ended long delays that had troubled commuters for the past three days. Residents expressed gratitude, noting that the Army had once again lived up to its reputation as the first responder in times of crisis—whether during floods, natural disasters, or emergencies.

With both tubes of the 4th Tawi bridge now functional, traffic movement within Jammu is expected to return to normal, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters who rely on the crucial link road.
