Air Quality Declines in Major Indian Cities During October Over Five Years

A recent study by climate-tech start-up Respirer Living Sciences has revealed that air quality in major Indian cities has deteriorated significantly during the month of October over the past five years. In Mumbai, the volume of pollutants, specifically Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5), doubled between 2019 and 2023. Similarly, other cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata also experienced an increase in PM2.5 levels, signifying worsening air quality in October.

City Authorities Take Measures to Combat Pollution

To address this growing issue, Mumbai has implemented several measures to combat pollution, including fitting vehicle-mounted air filters on 350 BEST buses, installing virtual chimneys at traffic congestion spots, placing special streetlights, and adding air purification systems in select gardens. The city has also acquired 30 vehicles equipped with sprinklers, and industries have been advised to increase chimney heights to mitigate pollution.

Concerns Over Air Quality Lead to Supreme Court Inquiry

Amid rising concerns over air quality, the Supreme Court has called upon Delhi and four neighboring states – Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan – to provide a report detailing the steps taken to reduce pollution. Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana is identified as a significant source of pollution, and a substantial increase in farm fires in Punjab has contributed to the deteriorating air quality.

Mixed Trends in PM2.5 Levels in Major Cities

While air quality deteriorated in many cities, a few state capitals, including Lucknow, Patna, Bengaluru, and Chennai, recorded a decrease in PM2.5 levels this year compared to the previous year. These variations highlight the need for sustained efforts to address air quality issues in different regions across the country.
