- On September 11, an Air Asia flight on the Kochi-Bengaluru route experienced technical difficulties shortly after takeoff from Cochin International Airport. The flight was carrying 168 passengers and six crew members.
- The flight had departed for Bengaluru late in the evening at 11:15 pm but had to return to Kochi due to a suspected hydraulic failure.
- Airport sources reported that a full emergency was declared at the airport in response to the technical issue. However, the flight safely landed back in Kochi, and there were no casualties or injuries. The emergency status was lifted after the safe landing.
Wildlife Smuggling Case at Kempegowda International Airport
- In a separate incident on September 8, customs officials at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru seized a significant number of animals from baggage that arrived on a Bangkok flight.
- The baggage, arriving on Air Asia Flight FD 137 from Bangkok at 10:30 pm, was found to contain a total of 78 animals, including 55 ball pythons in various color morphs and 17 king cobras. Six Capuchin monkeys were also discovered in the luggage, but they were already dead.
- All 78 animals were identified as Scheduled animals under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and listed under Appendices of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
- The animals were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act of 1962. The live animals were sent back to their country of origin, while proper sanitary measures were taken for the disposal of the deceased animals.
- The Bengaluru Customs department announced that further investigation into the wildlife smuggling case is ongoing.
These incidents highlight the importance of adhering to wildlife protection laws and the need for vigilance at international airports to combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
