Activist Launches Indefinite Hunger Strike for Maratha Reservation

Activist Manoj Jarange Patil initiated an indefinite hunger strike in Antarwali-Saraati, Maharashtra, pressing for Maratha reservation. Patil demanded the conversion of the state government’s draft notification on Maratha reservation into law during a special assembly session within two days. Additionally, he urged the government to start the process of withdrawing cases against Maratha community members. Patil emphasized the importance of implementing the law for reservation, stating that it is crucial for the Maratha community.

Earlier, Patil had announced his hunger strike, expressing doubts despite the state government’s draft notification on Maratha reservation. The community, led by Jarange Patil, seeks reservations in education and jobs under the OBC category. The agitation includes demands for Kunbi certificates, free education, and job reservations. The government issued an ordinance accepting these demands, but concerns about affecting OBC reservations persist.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde assured that Maratha reservation would be provided without altering other communities’ reservations. The Supreme Court, on May 5, 2021, had struck down Maratha reservations in colleges, higher education, and jobs, citing no valid grounds to breach the 50% reservation limit.
