Abdul El-Sayed Becomes First Muslim Elected to US Senate After Defeating Mike Rogers in Michigan
DETROIT, November 4, 2026 (VoM News): Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has made history by becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely contested Senate race, according to media projections.
El-Sayed’s victory keeps the seat in Democratic hands following the retirement of Senator Gary Peters and marks a breakthrough for the party’s progressive wing in a key political battleground.
“Michigan, we did it!” El-Sayed told supporters at his election headquarters in Detroit. “I am so proud and honoured to stand here as your senator-elect from the great state of Michigan.”
The 42-year-old, the son of Egyptian immigrants, is a physician and former public health official who has never previously held elected office. He campaigned on proposals including universal healthcare, reducing corporate influence in politics and addressing the financial pressures facing working families.
His victory follows a difficult political journey. Eight years ago, El-Sayed lost the Democratic primary for Michigan governor by a double-digit margin before securing his party’s Senate nomination in 2026.
The general election campaign was marked by sharp exchanges, with Republicans portraying El-Sayed as a radical and questioning his national security credentials. He rejected such allegations and focused his campaign on healthcare costs and economic concerns.
The contest also faced a late development when Congresswoman Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed defeated in the Democratic primary, endorsed Rogers shortly before Election Day.
El-Sayed’s election marks a historic milestone for Muslim representation in the US Congress. He will take office when the new Senate convenes in January 2027.
