India vs New Zealand 1st ODI 2026 LIVE Updates: India Won The Toss, Opted to Field First

India vs New Zealand 1st ODI 2026 LIVE Updates: Rain Delays Toss in Auckland, Covers Come Off as Weather Improves

AUCKLAND, November 4, 2026 (VoM News): (UPDATED) – India won the toss and opted to bowl first. The match now started after rains interference.

The toss for the opening ODI between India and New Zealand at Eden Park was delayed on Wednesday due to rain, with the weather improving later and the ground staff beginning to remove the covers.

The toss, originally scheduled for 2:30 pm local time (7:00 am IST), was officially delayed after a passing shower left the playing surface covered.

At 2:42 pm local time, an official update confirmed that the toss would take place at 2:50 pm (7:20 am IST), with the match scheduled to begin at 3:10 pm (7:40 am IST). No overs had been lost at the time of the update.

The umpires walked out to inspect the surface as conditions turned bright and sunny, raising hopes of an on-time start following the brief interruption.

The five-match ODI series is an important opportunity for both sides to assess their combinations ahead of next year’s World Cup in South Africa. India will be led by Shubman Gill, with senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli among the major attractions.

New Zealand, meanwhile, have been dealing with several injury concerns. Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra are unavailable for the series, while Devon Conway was ruled out of the opening match following a training-ground collision with Matt Henry. Tim Seifert was named as Conway’s replacement.

India also have several selection questions, particularly around the bowling combination and the No. 8 position. With Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna unavailable, players including Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Gurnoor Brar could have important roles.

New Zealand have won seven of their last eight ODI series, while India will look to improve their recent record on New Zealand soil. The visitors last won an ODI in the country in February 2019.

The opening match is being played at Eden Park, where short straight boundaries are expected to influence batting and bowling strategies.

Both captains are also expected to assess the surface, which New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner described as potentially bouncy.

ODI Series Crucial for 2027 World Cup Preparations says, Indian Skipper

On India's bowling combination, the captain confirmed that the team would field four fast bowlers alongside two all-rounders, Naman and Axar Patel.

The pace-bowling options named by Gill were Anshul, Auqib, Gurnoor and Arshdeep Singh, outlining India's decision to rely on a pace-heavy attack for the opening encounter.

Speaking at the toss, Gill said the presence of cloud cover influenced India's decision, explaining that having a target to chase could be advantageous if the match experienced any reduction in overs.

Gill described India's preparations for the ODI series as positive, saying the team had completed several productive practice sessions and that players were excited and well-prepared for the contest.

New Zealand in a Good Position Ahead of ODI Series, says Skipper Mitchell Santner

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has described the start of the ODI series as exciting, despite the quick turnaround following the conclusion of the T20I series, as both teams prepare for another contest.

Speaking ahead of the match, Santner said New Zealand were ready to move forward and expected another good batting surface. He acknowledged the demanding schedule but said the rotation of players had provided opportunities for squad members to demonstrate their abilities.

Discussing New Zealand's squad depth, Santner said changes in both teams had created opportunities for players coming into the side. He expressed satisfaction with how the incoming players had performed, describing the team's current position as positive.

Santner also provided an update on Devon Conway, confirming that the wicketkeeper-batter was recovering well after sustaining a head knock the previous day. However, Conway will not feature in the match as he has been advised to rest.

With Conway unavailable, Tim Seifert has been given an opportunity in New Zealand's top order. Santner identified Seifert, Will Young and Henry Nicholls as the team's top three batting options for the match.

The New Zealand captain also indicated that the bowling combination would have a similar structure to India's, with both sides expected to operate with four specialist bowlers.

Santner's comments highlighted New Zealand's approach of managing player workloads while maintaining squad balance during a demanding international schedule. The opportunity for Seifert and other players to step into the playing combination comes as New Zealand begin their ODI campaign following the T20I series.
