Abdel Fattah el-Sisi Wins Third Term in Egypt’s Presidential Elections
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has won a third term in Egypt’s presidential elections, securing a landslide victory with 89.6% of the votes, according to the National Elections Authority.
Over 39 million Egyptians cast their ballots for Sisi, who has ruled the country for a decade. The turnout reached an “unprecedented” 66.8% of voters, said the authority head.
Sisi’s victory was not in doubt, given the decade-long crackdown on dissent that eliminated any serious opposition to him.
He was running against three other candidates, none of whom were high-profile. Sisi’s re-election comes at a time when Egypt is dealing with several crises, including the Israel-Hamas war in neighboring Gaza and the country’s worst-ever economic crisis.
Under Sisi’s rule, Egypt has jailed thousands of political prisoners, and while a presidential pardons committee has freed about 1,000 in one year, rights groups said that three to four times as many were arrested over the same period.
Sisi’s third term, which will begin in April, will be his final term in office, according to the constitution. However, in both previous elections, Sisi won with 97% of the vote.
He extended the presidential mandate from four to six years and amended the constitution to raise the limit on consecutive terms in office from two to three.
Sisi’s victory was overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, which has threatened to expand into wider regional turmoil. The North African country is also in the midst of an economic crisis, with monthly inflation surging above 30%.
The Egyptian pound has lost 50% of its value against the dollar over the past 22 months, with one-third of the country’s 105 million people already living in poverty.
