Amazon India Workers Union Files Complaint Over Deaths of Two Workers in Haldwani Warehouse Fire
Amazon India Workers Union (AIWU) Files Complaint with Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) Over Deaths of Two Workers in Amazon Warehouse Fire in Haldwani
New Delhi, June 29, 2026: As Amazon announces its biggest ever Prime Day event in India, the Amazon India Workers Union (AIWU) is submitting a formal complaint to the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, regarding serious violations of workers’ safety, dignity, and right to life following the death of two workers in the Amazon warehouse fire at Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
On 5 June 2026, a major fire broke out at an Amazon warehouse operated through M & M Logistics Solutions at Jeetpur Negi, Rampur Road, Haldwani, resulting in the deaths of workers Late Shri Narendra Prasad and Late Shri Amit Arya. According to the FIR dated 11 June 2026, the workers were trapped inside the warehouse and were allegedly unable to escape because the shutter was locked from the outside.
AIWU’s complaint highlights serious workplace safety concerns, including the reported absence of a Fire NOC, emergency exits, fire alarms, smoke detectors, and proper ventilation. The warehouse reportedly contained inflammable and combustible materials, creating conditions that may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
The union has stated that witnesses heard screams from inside the warehouse during the incident, while firefighting efforts took more than two hours to fully control the blaze. Both deceased workers were primary earning members of their families, leaving their dependents facing severe emotional and financial hardship. Families have also raised concerns regarding the non-availability of CCTV footage related to the incident.
AIWU has stated that the incident raises serious questions about violations of workplace safety obligations, labour protections, fire safety regulations, and the constitutional guarantee of the right to life and dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
The complaint cites provisions under the Constitution of India, the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and relevant fire safety laws. It also refers to landmark Supreme Court judgments recognizing safe and humane working conditions as an essential part of workers’ fundamental rights.
AIWU has demanded:
- An independent judicial inquiry into the warehouse fire and the circumstances leading to the deaths of the two workers.
- Identification of all responsible persons and strict legal action.
- A thorough investigation of labour and fire safety compliance across Amazon-linked warehouses.
- Minimum compensation of ₹1 crore and rehabilitation support for the affected families.
- Immediate directions for safety audits and stronger workplace safety measures across warehouses to prevent similar tragedies.
AIWU President Dharmendra Kumar said:
“Workers cannot be treated as disposable while businesses expand and celebrate record-breaking sales. The deaths of Late Shri Narendra Prasad and Late Shri Amit Arya represent a grave failure of workplace safety and protection of human dignity. Every worker has the constitutional right to a safe workplace, and employers and authorities have a duty to ensure that no family loses its breadwinner because basic safety measures were ignored. We demand a transparent investigation, accountability for those responsible, and justice and rehabilitation for the affected families.”
AIWU has submitted the complaint along with its fact-finding report, a copy of the representation submitted to local authorities, and relevant newspaper reports, seeking urgent intervention from the labour authorities.
