NAIROBI, AUG. 20, 2026 [VoM News]: In a tragic incident, a tourist helicopter crash in central Kenya on Wednesday claimed the lives of seven individuals, including Ecuador’s intelligence chief and five American citizens.
The aircraft went down in Samburu County, just north of Nairobi, after taking off from the Loisaba wildlife reserve, according to aviation officials. The Kenyan Aircraft Accident Investigation Department has confirmed that the helicopter was carrying one pilot and six passengers, and unfortunately, there were no survivors.
Ecuador’s Transport Minister, Roberto Luque, has verified that Michele Sensi-Contugi, head of the National Intelligence Center, and his wife, Stephany, were on board. Sensi-Contugi, aged 42, had been leading Ecuador’s intelligence services since 2024 and was reportedly an close ally of President Daniel Noboa.
A spokesperson from the US State Department has confirmed the deaths of five American citizens but has not yet disclosed their names. Telemundo, a Spanish-language television network, has reported that Jose Alberto Suarez, a senior manager residing in Florida, was also among the victims.
Rescue and recovery efforts faced significant challenges due to the rough terrain and a fire burning at the crash site, according to the Kenya Red Cross. The county police chief of Samburu, David Nkoroi, stated that operations were halted overnight due to limited visibility and adverse conditions.
The helicopter had been flying with tourists for a scenic tour when the crash happened near the striking Mount Ololokwe, a well-known landmark and hiking spot, officials have said.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by Kenyan aviation authorities.
