Amid US-Israel Tensions, Iran Launches New Vessel Permit Rules for Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI, MAY 07, [VoM News]: Amid continuous tensions with the United States and Israel, Iran has now introduced a new permit-based transit system for vessels seeking passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

As per Press TV, ships are now mandated to obtain a transit permit and further comply with updated operational rules, which were earlier handled electronically by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA).

Following the regional conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes, Iran has introduced these countermeasures as shipping traffic through the route remains heavily restricted.

On the other side, reports are coming that Iranian lawmakers are also reportedly considering legislation to formalize restrictions on vessels linked to the United States and Israel, while introducing toll charges for ships from countries considered non-hostile.

The crucial waterway, which is one of the world’s most critical energy routes and handles roughly 20 percent of global oil shipments, has faced continuous disruption, raising concerns over global energy supply and maritime security.

As negotiations with Tehran have failed, Donald Trump had announced a US naval escort initiative called “Project Freedom” to guide ships through the strait. However, the plan was later paused.

Meanwhile, Iran’s military command had warned of serious consequences and retaliation if there was any foreign military presence near the strait, particularly involving US forces.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has accused the United States and its allies of threatening maritime security through what he described as blockade measures and ceasefire violations.

Iran is also looking to counter the United States blockade through other means.
