Iran Confirms Death of Ali Larijani; Basij Chief Also Killed in Israeli Strikes
Tensions in the Middle East intensified sharply after Iran confirmed the death of senior leader Ali Larijani, one of the country’s most influential decision-makers, in what Israeli officials described as a targeted strike. Larijani, who served as secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was reportedly killed alongside members of his family and security personnel.
The escalation comes amid ongoing military actions involving Israel, which also claimed responsibility for killing Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force. Israeli authorities described the strikes as a significant blow to Iran’s internal security structure.
The developments have added to fears of a broader regional conflict, as Israel continued strikes on Hezbollah-linked targets in Lebanon, targeting what it said were weapons facilities and militant infrastructure. The Israeli military signaled that operations would continue against individuals and groups it considers threats, including figures within Iran’s leadership.
Meanwhile, political tensions have also surfaced in United States. President Donald Trump criticized traditional allies, suggesting Washington should reconsider its role in NATO. He expressed frustration over what he described as insufficient support from allies in the ongoing conflict and in efforts to secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
In a parallel development, a US Navy warship believed to be carrying Marines is moving toward the Middle East, signaling a possible expansion of American military presence in the region. At the same time, internal dissent emerged within the US administration, as senior intelligence official Joe Kent resigned, citing ethical concerns over continued involvement in the war.
Elsewhere, Ukraine has reportedly deployed around 200 air defense specialists to assist in countering Iranian drone operations, according to statements by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The move underscores the widening international dimensions of the conflict.
On the ground, the humanitarian situation is deteriorating. In southern Lebanon, evacuation orders have triggered mass displacement from the city of Tyre, with civilians fleeing amid fears of further strikes. Long lines of vehicles have been reported on major routes out of the area.
Diplomatic efforts appear to be ongoing but uncertain. Iranian officials are reportedly in talks with multiple countries regarding oil trade arrangements, while the US State Department has instructed its diplomatic missions worldwide to reassess security measures amid concerns over potential spillover effects.
As the situation continues to evolve, global leaders face mounting pressure to prevent further escalation and address the growing humanitarian and geopolitical risks posed by the conflict.
