Zimbabwe Beat Australia by 23 Runs in Stunning T20 World Cup 2026 Upset
SRINAGAR: Zimbabwe produced one of the tournament’s biggest shocks on Friday as they defeated former champions Australia by 23 runs in a gripping T20 World Cup contest.
On a surface that demanded patience and discipline, Zimbabwe did the basics right — and did them better.
Zimbabwe Beat Australia After Bennett, Raza Power Competitive Total
Asked to bat first, Zimbabwe made full use of the conditions, finishing on 169 for 2. Opener Brian Bennett anchored the innings with a composed, unbeaten 64. He paced his knock smartly, rotating strike early before capitalising when the bowlers missed their lengths.
Tadiwanashe Marumani provided steady support in an assured opening stand that laid the platform. Once set, Zimbabwe shifted gears. Ryan Burl chipped in with a brisk 35, keeping the scoreboard moving through the middle overs.
Captain Sikandar Raza then supplied the late surge. His unbeaten 25 off just 13 balls gave the innings the push it needed, lifting Zimbabwe to what looked like a competitive — though not unassailable — total.
As it turned out, it was more than enough.
Zimbabwe Beat Australia as Muzarabani Sparks Top-Order Collapse
Australia’s chase never quite settled. Within five overs, they were reeling at 29 for 4, having lost Josh Inglis, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Tim David in quick succession.
Leading the charge was fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who delivered a spell of controlled aggression to finish with outstanding figures of 4 for 17. He hit hard lengths, extracted bounce, and forced mistakes. Support came from Brad Evans and Wellington Masakadza, while Burl played his part with the ball as well.
For a while, Australia threatened a comeback. Matt Renshaw counterattacked with a well-made 65 off 44 balls, sharing a 77-run stand with Glenn Maxwell (31). The partnership briefly shifted momentum and hinted at a turnaround.
But when Maxwell fell, the chase lost direction again.
With 56 needed from the final five overs, the pressure intensified. Marcus Stoinis, returning from a hand injury, couldn’t make an impact. Bennett held his nerve at the boundary to remove Ben Dwarshuis, and once Renshaw departed, Australia’s hopes faded quickly. The final wicket, that of Adam Zampa, sealed the result at 146 all out in 19.3 overs.
The victory marked only Zimbabwe’s second win over Australia in T20 World Cups, the previous one dating back to 2007. This one, however, will be remembered far longer — a night when Zimbabwe beat Australia through discipline, composure, and belief.
