Kashmir Satellite to go to space under ISRO’s IUST student space program
SRINAGAR: In a major step towards promoting space research and innovation in Jammu & Kashmir, a proposal has been put forward to establish a Satellite Incubator Centre at the Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), Awantipora.
The proposal was discussed on Friday when Dr. K. Gopalakrishnan, Project Director of the 75 Students’ Satellites Mission, called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Srinagar. Dr. Gopalakrishnan was accompanied by Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of IUST.
As part of the initiative, IUST is set to incubate and develop one of the 75 student satellites being designed across India. The satellite, to be developed in Kashmir and launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), will be called the “Kashmir Satellite.”
Officials said the development of the Kashmir Satellite will be a landmark achievement, not only for IUST but also for J&K’s youth, as it will promote hands-on research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in space technology.
The project falls under the nationwide 75 Students’ Satellites Program, coordinated by the University Space Engineering Consortium-India (UNISEC-India), which aims to strengthen space education and capacity-building among students.
According to the proposal, the initiative is also expected to open new pathways for advanced research, skill development, and industry linkages in satellite and space technologies for students in Jammu & Kashmir, while contributing to India’s broader mission of achieving self-reliance in strategic sectors.
