The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), a formidable armed police force under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has recently assumed responsibility for securing the infamous Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu. This high-security Central jail in the Union Territory houses more than 900 inmates, including several foreign nationals, and its safety is of paramount importance.
Changing of the Guard: CRPF to CISF
On October 20, the security of the Kot Bhalwal jail was transferred from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to the CISF. Under the leadership of a Deputy Commandant, approximately 260 CISF personnel have been deployed to ensure both inner and outer security coverage for the prison. For years, the CRPF had been entrusted with the security of this facility, but this recent handover marks a significant change.
CISF’s Expanding Role in Jammu and Kashmir
The Ministry of Home Affairs, on October 13, issued a directive for the CISF to assume control of the Kot Bhalwal jail from the CRPF. This is not an isolated case; it’s the second prison in Jammu and Kashmir to be secured by the CISF, a paramilitary force with nearly 1.75 lakh personnel.
Guardians of High-Security Prisons
Srinagar and Kot Bhalwal jails in Jammu and Kashmir are known for their sensitivity. They house a considerable number of dreaded terrorists and notorious criminals. Kot Bhalwal jail alone detains over 900 prisoners, including 17 foreign nationals. The prison holds 579 undertrials, 353 detainees, and 67 convicts. With the added responsibility of securing Kot Bhalwal jail, the CISF is now safeguarding one of the most critical infrastructure facilities in India.
