Chandrababu Naidu’s Remand Extended in Multi-Crore Skill Development Scam Case
In a recent development, the Vijayawada ACB (Anti-Corruption Bureau) court extended the remand of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief N Chandrababu Naidu in the alleged multi-crore skill development scam case until November 1. This decision came after Chandrababu Naidu was virtually presented before the court from the Rajahmundry Central Prison. The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TDP chief had been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on September 9, which ignited a significant political upheaval in the state.
Supreme Court’s Verdict Awaited
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment on a plea filed by Chandrababu Naidu, where he sought to quash the FIR registered against him in the skill development scam case. Mr. Naidu’s appeal cited Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, to challenge his arrest by the Andhra Pradesh police’s CID in connection with the skill development scam. He had also challenged the High Court’s judgment that had rejected his plea to quash the FIR. Currently, Naidu remains in judicial custody.
Allegations of Unsanctioned Arrest
Naidu has sought the quashing of the FIR registered by AP-CID in the alleged Rs 371 crore skill development scam on the grounds that the police did not obtain prior sanction from the Governor, as mandated under the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act. In the meantime, TDP workers have been actively demanding Chandrababu Naidu’s release and expressing their dissent through candle marches and rallies across the country.
Protests and Outrage
TDP leaders, in particular, staged a protest in Hyderabad, Telangana, against the arrest of the TDP Chief in the alleged skill development scam case. During the demonstration, they symbolically tied their hands with black ropes to emphasize their protest. Chandrababu Naidu’s wife, Nara Bhuvaneshwari, and son, Nara Lokesh, also joined the protest. Nara Lokesh expressed concern over Chandrababu’s arrest, claiming that there was no evidence to support it and that the arrest appeared to be an attempt to keep him away from the people. He further alleged a conspiracy to threaten Chandrababu’s life while he remains in judicial remand and claimed that the systems were being manipulated to achieve this.
